Judith Slaying Holofernes

Judith Slaying Holofernes

Artemisia Gentileschi

Description

The painting shows a dramatic moment from a biblical story. Judith, a Jewish widow, and her maidservant are in the middle of beheading the Assyrian general Holofernes. They had snuck into his tent while he was drunk, and Judith is now using his own sword to kill him and save her people. The scene is intense — blood spurts out, muscles are tense, and the women are fully focused on the act.

Analysis

This painting is a perfect example of Baroque drama. The scene is full of movement and emotion — you can almost feel the weight and struggle in Judith's arms. Gentileschi uses strong lighting and dark shadows to heighten the intensity, a classic chiaroscuro effect.
